Detailed Course Outline

Terminology

The training course will help you to become familiar with common project management terminology.

Project life-cycle

Good project management technique breaks down the project into distinct phases. The training course helps you to learn to break the project down into its separate phases and to learn what needs to be done in each phase.

Software development life-cycle

Delegates will gain an overview of the different software development life-cycle models and methodologies used today and will learn how to select an appropriate methodology and lifecycle for their project.

Due diligence

What things need to be checked before embarking on an outsourcing partnership? The outsourcing partner's history, finances, skill sets, management capability, the legal framework within the particular country and many more issues come to mind. The course covers the main aspects to conducting due diligence.

Creating a win-win partnership

Too many offshore software development projects fail because the client has failed to invest enough effort into building a win-win situation. Outsourcing is not about a quick money-saving, it is about building fruitful long-term partnerships. The course teaches delegates the different ways in which such partnerships can be built.

Setting up cross border teams

One of the dilemmas of managing projects offshore is the logistics of how to manage people in another continent working in a different time zone. This course teaches delegates how to turn this apparent disadvantage into an advantage.

Cross cultural communication

One of the major reasons why offshore projects can fail is the problem of communicating with teams who are unfamiliar with your own culture. Misunderstandings can happen on both sides and this course teaches delegates the ways to minimize such misunderstandings.

What are the goals of the project?

Successful project management requires an understanding of the goals to be accomplished by the project. On our training course, we will teach you how to identify goals and objectives.

Project scope

Good project management identifies the boundaries of the project. The training course helps you learn why defining the project scope early means more chance of success later.

Project constraints

All projects have constraints imposed on them. Learn why it's important to document and understand these constraints to enable successful project management.

Stakeholders

Good project management techniques will fail if the project manager does not understand which people have an interest in the outcome of the project. Learn the importance of identifying and managing stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Identifying the work

Learn the importance of clearly identifying the work to be done. During the training course, you will practise using common project management techniques such as creating Work Breakdown Structures to identify and package the work.

Roles & responsibilities

Learn how to identify the roles and responsibilities of your project team members.

Team building

One of the keys to success on any project is having the right team. Getting the team to work together towards a successful common goal is one of the most challenging aspects of project management.

Leadership

Leadership involves many things: clearly identifying and communicating goals and objectives, inspiring people to work hard not through coercion but through a common belief, having the ability to solve problems and being able to see the wood from the trees.

Estimating

Accurate estimations are critical on any project. Learn how estimation is a pitfall that many project management methods fail to overcome.

Scheduling

A critical project management technique made easier by software tools. On our training course you will learn to perform effective scheduling and practise creating Gantt charts as the key project management planning technique.

Critical path analysis

A crucial part of the project management toolset is the ability to analyse which tasks may delay your project. The training course will help you to understand how to apply this critical technique to help you deliver on time.

Budgeting

No project management method is complete without an understanding of how to create and manage a budget. Our training course helps you learn how budgeting is performed throughout the project lifecycle.

Project planning

Learn how to write a formal project plan document that will set out the plan for the whole of the project.

Baselines

Setting baselines is an often misunderstood and overlooked component of effective project management. Understand why baselines are critical to project success and learn how to apply baselines to your project plans.

Tracking progress

Effective project management doesn't finish with writing the project plan but continues throughout the project lifecycle. You will learn what things you will need to track in order to keep your project on track.

Change management

Change is inevitable on any project and project management best practices require a project manager to manage these changes effectively. On our training course you will learn the best way to manage change without jeopardising your project.

Risk management

Failing to manage risks properly is one of the main reasons why many projects fail. You will learn some key risk management techniques to help you avoid your project failing.

Project Success

An understanding of why project management best practices are essential to improve the chances of project success.

Post project reviews

You will learn how to conduct a post project review and how to apply the lessons learned from previous projects to future projects.
